He got his degree in Chemistry in the UPV/EHU in 1988 and his Ph.D. in 1995 in the same university under the direction of Prof. Fernando Castaño, with a work on the reaction of carbene radicals. Then he moved to Colorado State University (FT. Collins, USA) to work on the formation of pre-reactive aggregates and their characterization using spectroscopic methods.
In 2001 he returned to UPV/EHU with a post-doctoral contract (Spanish Government) where he finally stabilized thanks to a Ramón y Cajal contract (2001, first promotion). Since then, he has been PI in two research lines: one related to the study of non-covalent aggregates using mass-resolved laser spectroscopy and a second one of image of lipids in tissues using mass spectrometry.
