He obtained a Degree in Chemistry in 1985 at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) and a PhD in Chemistry in 1990 at the same university, with a work about laser induced fluorescence of diatomic molecules. He worked as a postdoc at the Department of Chemistry of the University of Cambridge (1991-1992), studying infrared spectroscopy of radicals in gas discharges. Since 2020 he is Professor of Physical Chemistry at the UPV/EHU.
His research interests have focused on the spectroscopy and dynamics of small molecules in the gas phase using laser methods, and infrared spectroscopy of atmospheric particles. Currently he works in the field of rotational spectroscopy of isolated molecules.
